Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Hickory

The weather is finally warming up and soon you might have to change over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Climate Control Systems, there are a number of other tasks you can do to remain cozy and save money throughout the year.

During the transformation season in Hickory, those far too few spring temps, you may use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on your bills? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a handful of things to keep in mind:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by even a couple degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t affect your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand beneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than what the thermostat says.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like they are lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Remember, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
